  • Condition: Good condition for age. a Clean and odorless from nonsmoking environment. The portrait gives the appearance of an original oil -- showing both of the quality and art of lithography in the nineteenth century. Colors are bright. No writing, tape, or repairs. No bleed through of text. Right side of folio page uneven where removed from text. Pale splotches on right side, and a few on left. None interfere with the portrait itself. Refer to written description and photographs for more information.

    Up for auction at the Grand Antique Mall, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, is an antique hand colored 1837 folio print of
    LAP-PA-WIN-SOE,
    a Delaware Chief. From McKenney & Hall's
    History of the Indian Tribes of North America
    , the portrait was painted by Charles Bird King. Published by E. C. Biddle in Philadelphia. Colored and printed at J.T Bowen's.
    Folio measures 14"W x 19.5”H
    The portraits in McKenney and Hall's publication are the only surviving record of prominent nineteenth century Native Americans.
    Portraits by Charles Bird King became even more significant in 1865, when almost all of  his original tribe paintings were destroyed  in a fire at the Smithsonian.
